Q: Should you skip the gym when you have a cold?
A. Yes, stay home and rest!
B. No, sweat it out!
C. It depends on my symptoms.
D. I'll just have some chicken soup and call it a day.
The answer is C. It all depends on your symptoms! Mild to moderate activity is usually okay if you have a common cold with no fever. Generally, if your symptoms are “above the neck” – runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat – exercising should pose little to no risk and may even help you feel better by opening your nasal passages and temporarily relieving nasal congestion. But if your symptoms are “below the neck” – body aches, chest congestion or tightness, hacking coughs – workouts should be postponed. Grab that chicken soup and head to bed!
